Upper Level Thinking

Upper Level Thinking (ULT) is the Georgia Center for Academic Excellence’s state-funded program. ULT is an esteem-based, after-school tutoring program focused on raising students’ critical thinking abilities. This program meets four times per week. A typical week for a ULT student looks like this:

Two days a week, students will complete project-based learning activities and STEM competition exercises.
One day a week, students will complete enrichment opportunities, including:
- Anti-bullying seminars
- Internet safety lessons
- Social media posting advice (what they should and shouldn’t be posting)
One day a week, students will enjoy at least 30 minutes of physical activity, such as Zumba classes.

PROGRAM OFFERINGS

Like our other programs, ULT’s ultimate goal is to help students complete high school, enroll in college, and graduate. We accomplish this by offering age-appropriate educational assistance such as extra reading exercises for younger students. All students receive subject tutorials, supplemental assistance, and help with homework.

In the ULT program, we focus on beginning college conversations early and continuing them throughout a student’s career. For elementary school students, conversations may be as basic as discussing what they want to be when they grow up. These conversations grow more serious and specific as students get older to involve assistance in identifying potential scholarships and completing college applications. Students participating in the ULT program will need to provide their own transportation to our center.

UNIQUE ACTIVITIES & OPPORTUNITIES

ULT activities and opportunities are constantly changing and being updated. Our students have so many opportunities to challenge themselves and complete unique and exciting projects, many of which are STEM-focused. A recent example of the incredible opportunities we offer our students is an Earth Eco-Challenge completed by a few of our 5th-grade girls. These students took water kits to the Ocmulgee River and Lake Tobesofkee to measure pH-levels and oxygen content. They tested drinking water by comparing river and lake water to tap water and presented their findings about water filtration at a conference in Atlanta.

Students involved in ULT may also attend a four-week summer session. This program is Monday through Friday, from 9 am-3 pm. Students have the chance to work on unique summer-long projects that change each year. They also receive remedial help and preparation for what they will work on in the upcoming school year.

Upper-Level Thinking is available to any student, ages 5-18, in any Bibb County school.
